{"id":7,"date":"2011-11-01T17:37:33","date_gmt":"2011-11-01T21:37:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mysysltd.com\/?p=6"},"modified":"2011-11-01T17:37:33","modified_gmt":"2011-11-01T21:37:33","slug":"dealing-with-receipts-when-your-car-is-your-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.stuffifiguredout.com\/?p=7","title":{"rendered":"What to do with all those receipts!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuffifiguredout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/receipts_folder_s1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-70\" title=\"Receipts Folder\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stuffifiguredout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/receipts_folder_s1.png\" alt=\"Receipts Folder\" width=\"240\" height=\"212\" \/><\/a>It took me a long time to come up with a way of dealing with receipts that I could live with.\u00a0 Envelopes get too messy and bulky, and because the number of the number of categories I wanted, required too many.\u00a0 I tried putting them in a plastic bin when I came home at night but that was really just another way of procrastinating.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">My solution &#8211; a letter sized coupon folder from an office supply store that&#8217;s properly categorized and kept in the car.\u00a0 Every time I get back in the car I file the one or two receipts I&#8217;ve acquired.\u00a0 At the end of the year I just put the entire folder in with my filing and start a new one.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve found that the folders with a stitched cloth edge are the most robust.<\/p>\n<h3>File Categories<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Auto Fuel<\/strong> receipts get filed right after the fill-up, I&#8217;m in the car after all.\u00a0 I try to make a habit of writing the odometer reading on the receipt.\u00a0 It helps as a cross check for my travel records.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Auto Maintenance<\/strong> ditto for oil changes and other service work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bank personal<\/strong> is for ATM slips or teller transaction slips.\u00a0 I usually purge these after I see them on the bank statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Receipts &#8211; Personal<\/strong> are for things that I might have to return or will be needed for a warranty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Receipts &#8211;\u00a0Home<\/strong> are for items that contribute to the cost of running the home for tax purposes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expenses<\/strong> are things that I bought with my own cash or credit that will be charged to the company.\u00a0This sections\u00a0is emptied regularly when they are attached to my weekly expense report.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Receipts &#8211; Business<\/strong> are things that I&#8217;ve bought with company cash or bank card.
